So many lives have been altered by fear, there must be a fast phobia cure. When it comes to mental illness or mental disorder, so to speak, phobias are very near the top of the list. When you think about this, one cannot help but consider all of the lost potential. It is truly a shame that so many people have had to alter their lives just to get through the day. Many people suffering from phobias avoid potentially frightening situations, even when there is no true danger, which greatly alters the quality of life. Is there a fast cure for these phobias?
Perhaps you have heard people talking about, or maybe you have witnessed for yourself, people being cured very quickly of a phobia. Maybe you have seen television programs where they bring a person onto the stage who is terrified of spiders, and give them the opportunity to tell about it. The person is then brought back stage. About 10 to 15 minutes later, the person returns to the stage, where they allow the biggest, hairiest spider you have ever seen in your life to crawl all over them. But how? How did they do this?
Neuro linguistic programming. NLP has become quite popular, especially in dealing with people who suffer from phobias and other psychological issues. Basically NLP is based on the theory that, frequently people set limitations in their lives based on how they have been” programmed” to react in certain situations. The belief is also that people can be “reprogrammed” through a specific method of “re-experiencing” the event which created the limitation.
Through one method of NLP which claims to have excellent results as a fast phobia cure, the individual experiencing the phobia is encouraged to imagine that they are watching themselves on a movie screen. On this screen they are to see themselves after the reaction to experiencing great fear. This image is to be a single frame in black and white. The person is then asked to “view” a phobic episode in color and running backwards. Once again they are to “view” the single frame image in black-and-white. This process is repeated several times, after which the fear or phobia has apparently been put into a different perspective within the mind. The individual is then able to deal with the former phobia any healthy manner.
Everyone has heard at one time or another “it’s all in your mind”. Perhaps that is not a negative statement after all. It seems that the human mind and body both have a great capacity for self healing.
